Mario VS. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars Impressions
On Friday, I bought and downloaded Mario VS. Donkey Kong Tipping Stars for the Wii U. I also got a code for the 3DS version. I gave the code to my father. He's been playing the game a lot. I've been playing the game a ton too and here are my impressions of the game so far (note: this is not review. I may do one later though):
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I love this game! I just want to say that right away. Tipping Stars is a blast.
The game comes with a bunch levels by Nintendo, but the real star of the game is the level editor. The editor is extremely easy to use and just about anybody can make a level. I've made a few so far. Here is a picture of my favorite one I've made. Please check it out if you have the game:
I've made two other levels and I'm working on my fourth level at the moment. I've had so much fun creating these levels.
Also, I love how many levels are already in the Community section. The Mario VS. Donkey Kong level creators are so very creative. There are some pretty complex levels on the server but there's also some simple, yet really fun levels too.
With all the levels that Nintendo provides, plus the Community, and level maker, well, I'll be playing Tipping Stars for quite awhile.
Other things worth mentioning:
The graphics are wonderful. So colorful and cute. The gameplay might seem simple but it can get pretty complex and interesting.
I think the only thing that I don't like about the game are the load times. When you first start up the game, there is a bit of load time and when you go into different sections of the game, like the level maker or the Community, you can have a bit of wait.
But really, the load times are the only thing I can find to nitpick about Tipping Stars. I'm pretty addicted to the game. I've been playing it more than Code Name Steam or even Animal Crossing New Leaf (what?!).
Mario VS. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars is a must own for puzzle game fans. Especially if you love to create your own levels. Oh and you get TWO copies of the game: Wii U and 3DS, for ONE PRICE. Its an absolutely awesome deal and I hope Nintendo (and Indies) do more games like this.
Wait, here's another level I did:
Love this game!

Happy birthday 3DS!
Nintendo announced a new Animal Crossing for the 3DS. I've been a fan of the series from the start (as I've mentioned previously) and so I knew I HAD to have a 3DS. I just had to.
And then the new Animal Crossing game didn't come out till quite a bit later!
Nintendo announced the Animal Crossing game too early & I was unhappy with that. On the plus side, I became an early adaptor of one of my favorite handhelds.
Its been a bumpy four years for 3DS. In the beginning, the system had no games. It didn't even have an internet browser or the Eshop when I got it (at launch). When the browser and the eshop arrived in June of that year, the 3DS was changed forever. I bought Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening that first day. I had never owned the Gameboy color version. I had missed out on the Gameboy color completely. So it was a special treat to get to play that. Oh and later I got to play the two Gameboy color Zeldas that I had missed out on too! The eshop had a great new feature to the system. And that internet browser is my most played thing on the system!! What? Don't look at me like that! I check twitter a lot. I'm addicted...
But it was a still a long while before there were any games for the 3DS. Like the early days of the Wii U, the 3DS was overpriced and undersold. The high price, lack of advertisement and no games meant that the 3DS was a flop....
Right?
Well, not exactly. Nintendo decided to drop the price early on. This could have gotten fans mad at them, but Nintendo was really smart about it and rewarded loyal customers that bought the system early. Early adopters, like me, got a bunch of OK NES titles and some really AWESOME Gameboy Advance games for FREE. I was especially excited to have Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap. No matter the quality of the games, though, it was a great reward for early buyers of the 3DS (and for those who were lucky enough to buy a 3DS cheaper and get in on the early adopter program).
And it wasn't too long after that that the 3DS started selling and it started getting games. At first, it was Mario games. It really frustrated me at the time that we were getting so many Mario games and Animal Crossing was taking forever. Looking back at it, those Mario games are all good. But at the time, it was so annoying.
Finally, Animal Crossing New Leaf came out and it was WONDERFUL. It was and still is my favorite 3DS game. Not a day goes by that I don't play the game. Yes, I still play New Leaf and love it a lot.
We've gotten other really great titles for the system too, like Fire Emblem Awakening, Fantasy Life, Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Mario & Luigi Dream Team, Luigi's Mansion, Kid Icarus Uprising, and recently Code Name STEAM (just to name a few). The 3DS has really turned things around.
And with the arrival of the NEW 3DS, Nintendo is extending the life of the system. Its amazing to think about that. When the system came out, everyone was calling it a flop: talking about how it had no games, the price was too high, and that Nintendo was DOOMED. Then Nintendo turned it around and look where we are now. A second generation 3DS system. Amazing!
So today is the fourth anniversary of the Nintendo 3DS. Its been a bumpy ride but Nintendo turned things around and made the 3DS into a MUST HAVE handheld system. If you love handhelds, the 3DS is the one you have to own right now. It has so many great games. Animal Crossing New Leaf is still the very best one, in my opinion.
Can't wait to see what Nintendo does next with the system! It looks like we'll have the handheld around for a bit longer. Who would have thought! Guess Nintendo wasn't doomed after all, eh?

Recent Reviews and Some Random Thoughts
I've written some recent reviews at Shigeru News and thought I'd post links to them here:
I really liked Elliot Quest, despite its bugs (and how hard it was): https://shigerureviews.wordpress.com/2015/03/21/elliot-quest-wii-u-review/
I was so surprised by Monster Combine TD for 3DS. I'm not usually a tower defense game fan: https://shigerureviews.wordpress.com/2015/03/14/monster-combine-td-3ds-review/
Proun+ for 3DS shocked me. What an inventive and very cool game: https://shigerureviews.wordpress.com/2015/03/07/proun-3ds-review/
I thought Titan Attacks was alright but you might as well go play Space Invaders instead: https://shigerureviews.wordpress.com/2015/02/25/titan-attacks-3ds-review/
I've been writing the news a lot at Shigeru News lately too.
Various Thoughts:
I'm not excited about Splatoon. It looks like a neat game but I'm just not into shooters like I use to be. I guess I'd have to play a demo to see if its for me.
I'm loving Code Name STEAM. Yes, it has third person shooter elements, but it has TONS of strategy and a wonderful comic book feel to the cutscenes. The story is silly but I dig it. Its one of my favorite games right now (even though I'm stuck on a battle at the moment).
I'm not a mobile gamer. And I'm not ready for a new Nintendo console. I love the Wii U and 3DS.
Mario Party 10 doesn't look great but I thought it was fantastic what Nintendo did on twitter for the game. I liked all the questions/trivia, contests (even though I won nothing), etc. Its too bad some Nintendo fans didn't appreciate it...
Why are people buying the PS4 over the Wii U? I just don't get it. PS4 is just getting a lot of remasters of last generation (PS3) games so far. What's exciting about that? Yes, I understand Sony has a better marketing campaign than Wii U but can't people think for themselves too? Don't they do any research about games? Or do they even care? I just don't understand these video games fans...
Wiiware was awful. The Wii U eshop, though, is pretty spectacular, imo. There's so much variety (not all of it is good but there is a lot of choices). I wish I could say the same for the 3DS eshop, which is has been a bit dull lately (Monster Combine TD & Proun+ being exceptions).
There is a Puzzles and Dragons (3DS) demo coming in early May! I'm very interested in that game. Can't wait to try out the demo.
When will we see the next Nintendo Direct? Many people have been speculating this week because of the Splatoon press event today. I'm not sure. I think we'll see one before May anyway. I hope its soon.
I'll be back on Friday with an Indie preview!

You'll Never Be Alone
Never Alone, by Upper One Games & E-Line Media, is a really unique looking/sounding game. It centers around an young Iñupiat girl and an arctic fox as they go on a journey to find the source of a storm to save everything that they care about. The game will take place in a really harsh environment and you can switch between the two characters or play the game with a friend.
The concept is totally unique and interesting but what really sets this game apart from any other game is that it was developed with the help of the Iñupiat, an Alaska Native people. So the story is very faithful to those people and the game will also include many stories from that culture. In fact, stories from the culture will be told along with the game's story & in the native language (there will be subtitles). The game will include videos and other extras that'll let you learn even more about the Iñupiat.
So Never Alone plans to entertain and teach the player about another culture. We rarely see a game that attempts to do something this ambitious.
All that and the graphics in this game look stunning, as you can tell by the pictures I'm including here.
And take a look at this jaw dropping trailer for the game:
Never Alone will be coming to the Wii U in June. It looks really amazing.

Code Name S.T.E.A.M. Impressions
This is not a review of Code Name S.T.E.A.M for 3DS. I got the game on Friday and I've been playing the game all weekend.
These are my thoughts on Code Name S.T.E.A.M so far:
---------------------------------------------------------------
Code Name STEAM is a wonderful looking game thats influenced by American comic books. This is most noticeable in the cutscenes where actual comic book panels show up. I absolutely love the cutscenes.
While the game's cutscenes are great, the story is very weird. I'm not altogether sure what's going on yet but I still think the cutscenes are incredibly cool. Most of the voice acting is pretty good so far, expect for Tom Sawyer. Ugh. And I'm not sure about the Scarecrow yet. We'll see. I do like most of the characters I've met, although I think a few of them may be a bit stereotypical (Tom being the worst so far and the main reason I don't like the character. well that and the voice).
STEAM's gameplay, though, is probably the best thing about the game. I'm so very addicted to the battles. Thats not to say the gameplay is perfect. I do wish there was a map available, even if you had to push the start button or some other button to bring it up. Its easy to get lost in the more complicated levels. Also STEAM is a VERY tough game. Its easy to get frustrated with some levels. That said, wow, I'm addicted to this game. The battles are so full of strategy, surprises, and the controls work very well. I'm playing the game on a regular 3DS and using a stylus to control the camera. Some people may not like that, but I think STEAM's stylus camera control is excellent. The rest of the controls are too. I like the game a bunch. I could barely stop playing the game over the weekend. And when I'm not playing STEAM, I'm thinking about playing it.
I've been sticking to the single player. I tried the online multiplayer just once and did horrible at it. I'll probably try it again after playing a bunch more of the single player.
Overall, I like Code Name STEAM a lot. Its very different from anything else Nintendo has ever done. Its a mix of the turn-based strategy & shooter put into a comic book blender. I can see why not everyone loves it. This game won't appeal to everyone. I think its amazing that Nintendo did this game though and I'm glad to see them trying new things. Oh and I hope enough people liked & bought the game so that there will be a sequel. I have no idea if thats even possible. I guess we'll see.
I do plan to do a review of Code Name STEAM sooner or later. But I have a bunch more of the game to play. It could be awhile before a review comes out! For those interested in the game, you should try the demo first and see if the game is for you. Hope you like it. I think its a really fun game.

This Platformer is Not Cold At All
The Wii U has a lot of 2D platformers but it doesn't have very many 3D platformers.
Freeze Me, from developer Rainy Night Creations, looks to fix this problem.
Freeze Me is a 3D platformer with a unique twist. The main character has a camera and can take pictures of enemies and objects and that freezes the objects/enemies for a short period time.
Take a look at this trailer:
The main character uses her camera to freeze a log in the trailer. The camera could come in handy for getting to higher places and beating tricky enemies. I also really like the part where the main character flies. Very cool!
The game clearly takes inspiration from Super Mario Galaxy. But I think some of the levels also has a clear Mario 64 element too. It could be the best of both worlds.
I also love how colorful this game looks! We see a lot of platformers that seem a bit darker these days but Freeze Me is very bright and cheerful. It will fit in quite well with Nintendo games on the Wii U.
Speaking of which, Freeze Me will be coming to Kickstarter soon and it has been announced that they'll be aiming for a Wii U goal.
Check out this video:
A very Meta-video for sure. Love it!
I'll be sure to post a link on my blog here when the game is up on Kickstarter. Please support it if you can. Freeze Me looks like a lot of fun!
--------------------------------------------------------------
I heard about the game & got the videos from this article from Nintendo Everything: http://nintendoeverything.com/3d-platformer-freezeme-in-the-works-for-wii-u/
On Monday, I should have First Impressions of Code Name Steam! The game comes out today and it looks like I'll be getting it in the mail today. Can't wait to play it.

Freedom For This Planet!
The Sonic games use to be good. But now Sega is too obsessed with making Sonic modern and adding fancy 3D visuals, questionable voice acting, and a story.
Enter Freedom Planet, from developer Galaxy Trail, an upcoming Wii U action platformer thats just as fast as the older Sonic games and stays 2D. That said, the game does look really beautiful and has some very unique enemies, unlike those old Sonic games. Plus you have multiple main characters you can play as & the character design is fantastic. It does have a story, but its doesn't look like it'll get in the way of the action.
The game DOES have the questionable voice acting of the new Sonic games though. But you don't have to listen to it. You can choose between full voice acting, text boxes (like rpgs), or just get right into the action like the old school Sonic games. It also has some modern extras, like achievements!
Freedom Planet looks like its going to be a really cool game.
Here's the official trailer:

Various Thoughts
I've been thinking about some various game & blog related things, so I thought I'd share today.
The most important thing I want to share is that tomorrow I'll be starting a new schedule for this blog and my other blog: Its A Comic Review Blog!
Here's the schedule:
Monday & Friday: More Thoughts From Me blog entries.
Tuesday & Thursday: Its A Comic Review Blog! entires
I'll be taking Wednesday, Saturday, & Sunday off from the blogs to focus my short story writing (which I've neglected for awhile now) and other bits of writing too (what about the tumblr?! THINK OF THE TUMBLR!!)
So yes, that means no more Daily blog entries from me. I guess it couldn't last forever. Well maybe it could have but I just feel like I should make this change. Also I should note that neither blog will be active on holidays and I may take an extra day off occasionally from both.
That said, it is possible that I will have a surprise blog entry for both once & awhile (on non-schedule days). It depends on what extra games I have to review (or if I run into a cool game I want to talk about) or comics I have for reading. We'll see.
Oh and if you're interested, I have a lot of news & reviews written over at https://shigerureviews.wordpress.com/ including my recent review for indie racing game Proun+, which I loved.
Other things I've been thinking about:
I feel bad about the recent Zombie Incident Review. I completely missed out on the save feature. I've been playing it some (found the save & another thing too) and will try to have an updated review next week.
Also next week, Code Name S.T.E.A.M. comes out for the 3DS! My copy is preordered and I'll be getting it in the mail. Will I get it next week? I have no idea! I really hope so. I'll write up some first impressions as soon as possible too.
Does anybody actually read this blog? I'll like to see some comments. Please let me know what you like about this blog and what you don't like. Are there any types of features you'd like to see or games you'd like me to talk about? Feedback would be much appreciated.
Ugh. I hate Daylight Savings Time.
Ok, that last one had nothing to do with games or this blog. Or did it?! (no it didn't).
So, anyway, I'll see you all tomorrow. I'll do an indie game preview!

Note on Yesterday's Zombie Incident Review
I've taken yesterday's Zombie Incident review down. The developer let me know that the game does actually save when you beat the enemies in certain rooms & unlock special doors. I'll be going back and checking this out.
Hopefully the review will be back up next week with new impressions on saving & possibly a new score.

Zombie Incident (3DS) Review
Zombie Incident, from developer CoderChild, was just released yesterday for the Nintendo 3DS eshop. The game harkens back to 2D side scrollers like Castlevania in its look and feel, while playing similar to a Mario game. You jump on your enemies head to defeat them.
The game is also a cheaper price game. Its only $1.99 on the eshop.
So with the game being a homage to older games and being priced at a bargain, what can we expect out of Zombie Incident? Is it a good game or should you just save your money?
Zombie Incident has a story at the beginning. Its a bit darker than you'd think too. Its very much a Castlevania-like story. Perhaps even darker then those games.
But the story is not really that important.
What is important about Zombie Incident is its gameplay. This is very simple game. There really isn't much to the gameplay but what is there is very challenging. The enemies are tough and most of all, you can get easily lost in the levels. The second screen map is a bit vague and doesn't help much.
Thankfully, the game does have a save system in place. When you beat all the zombies in a room with a door, the door will open and the game will save when you go through the door. I wish the game made let the player know about the save feature, though, because at first I thought there was no way to save the game (thanks to the developer for letting me know about this feature). That said, I am glad this game has a save. Zombie Incident is an extremely tough game. Its nice to be able to save and come back to it later.
The game also has an online leaderboard and you can see where you're ranked. The further you get in the game and the more enemies you defeat, the higher your score. Fans of going for the highest score they can get and then showing it off will love this. There is no multiplayer; local or online. I wish this game had more modes and extras.
Zombie Incident does control well though. You can use the A, B, & R buttons to jump, the touch screen to jump, or the up button on the D-Pad. That last option may be the best of the jump options. The D-Pad controls you're movement, your jump, and pressing down on the D-Pad is the only way to go into save doors, so you don't have to worry about another button when you use it. Its a simple, but very effective way to control the game. All of the controls work very well though. This is a hard game but the way the game controls makes it a really fun game too.
I really like Zombie Incident's graphics. Its very retro and nice looking. There is an Anime character on the title screen, though, and she doesn't really fit in with the rest of the game's artwork. Thankfully, the only time you see the art is on the title screen.
The game also has 3D and the 3D looks nice. Platforms stick out a bit and the levels seem to have more depth. That said, I liked playing in 2D more because the game just felt more retro that way.
Zombie Incident only has one song during the levels but it doesn't get annoying. Its very retro and so are the sound effects. Both are well done.
Zombie Incident is a good game. The retro gameplay, art, and sound are all well done. I like that the game has a save system, but I wish it had been a more obvious save system. Though, its nice to be able to take a break from this game. Zombie Incident is a hard game. I wish there had been an easy mode and that the bottom screen map hadn't been so vague. That all said, the game's controls work so well and the game is fun despite its difficulty.
If you like challenging (and fun) platformers, then you may want to download Zombie Incident. It is a good game and the price is the best you'll see on the 3DS eshop.
My Score: 7.5/10

Who IS Octodad?
WHO IS THIS...GUY?!
Why does his family look like this....
OCTODAD: Dadliest Catch is coming to the Wii U this summer. Finally, Wii U players will get to play around with this physics based sim game. Originally the game was for PC and then PS4 and Vita. Now its coming to our system.
Yet, the question remains....WHO. IS. OCTODAD?!
According to the official trailer and official site and everywhere else, he is a father. he is husband. he is....a SECRET OCTOPUS.
Yes, no one knows that he is an octopus. How is that possible? I'm not really sure.
I do know that I really love the goofy theme song in this trailer:
Thats the PS4 trailer. There is no Wii U trailer yet. I hope the game looks this good on the Wii U.
And I hope the mystery of Octodad is finally solved. Man, this is going to drive me nuts till this game comes out....

Just a Boy and His Box
Today, Nintendo revealed Box Boy, a game from Hal Laboratory. Hal is the creator of this guy:
and they also created:
So you know Boxboy has to be awesome.
From what I saw in this video:
Boxboy is a puzzle platformer. You have to use boxes to figure your way through a level. You only have so many boxes and so many turns (it looks like).
This game will be on the eshop only. It shouldn't be too expensive. For us Puzzle platformer fans, this will be a MUST DOWNLOAD.
It should be out this Spring! I'll write about it again then.

You Shall Die Again Shovel Knight!
Man, that villain Shovel Knight. Isn't he the worst? Don't you wish you could play as SOMEONE ELSE in that game Shovel Knight. Maybe someone with BOMBS?
In the second quarter of this year (2015 newbie!), Yacht Club Games plans to release a FREE UPDATE of the Wii U/3DS game Shovel Knight. The update will add a new campaign staring the ever amazing fantastic Plague Knight!!
Shovel Knight will stand out of the way and Plague Knight will take over and I am. SO. VERY. EXCITED.
The new Plague Knight campaign will add new enemies to fight, some new areas, new objectives, AND it'll add an Alchemy system!!! You'll be able to collect loot in order to craft weapons & powerups!! Isn't that awesome?
Plus the way Plague Knight plays will be totally different from Shovel Knight. Plague Knight has bombs (and BOMB JUMPS). While Shovel Knight just has his pathetic shove....OW! Stop that Shovel Knight....
Anyway, I hate Shovel Knight. Plague Knight looks awesome. I can't wait to play this new update. If you haven't bought Shovel Knight for Wii U or 3DS, what are you waiting for?! This game is about to become SO VERY COOL.
I got all these pictures from here: http://yachtclubgames.com/plague-of-shadows/ . And there's more there! You should look at 'em.
Sincerely, Plague Knight. Who really wrote this. Daniel is over there laying on the floor. Don't worry. He'll be fine. He should be back tomorrow. Maybe. Possibly. Wait...did I use too much bomb powder....?

I like the Super Mario Bros. Movie
What makes a good movie?
Everyone has different ideas about what a good movie is. Some people like the Transformers movies. Some people like the Marvel Studios movies (I do!). While others think that only serious movies, like the English Patient, should be considered good.
I won't even discuss great movies. Great movies truly only come around once and awhile. And everyone will fight you tooth and nail about what a GREAT movie is.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is not a great movie. But I'd argue that it is a good one. Or at the very least a FUN one.
How do you make a movie out of the Mario Bros? Video game movies rarely work. Tomb Raider? Ugh. Awful. Mortal Kombat? Its ok. Resident Evil? The first one is good, the second one is ok, after that...hmm. Well. I've seen worse.
The Super Mario Bros. games just don't have much of a story. Bowser steals the Princess, two plumbers go to rescue her. Thats it. If you think about that, the movie did stay true to that basic concept. But a movie needs more than just that. Movies need details and the Mario Bros games lacked details. So the movie people had to fill in those details in. They'd never be able to make everybody happy. Heck, if you listen to most critics and fans about this movie, you'd think that no one liked it.
I like this movie. I guess some would call it a guilty pleasure. I don't believe in guilty pleasures. If you like something, you like it. Why should I feel guilty about liking the Mario Bros movie just because YOU don't like it?
So what is it I like about this movie?
I thought the main two actors did a good job of being Mario & Luigi. They believed in it. They played brothers and went along for the ride. Sure, the villains of the movie are a bit goofy. Bowser doesn't really look like Bowser. Give these guys a break. CGI wasn't like it is now. This movie was made in the 90s. So they decided to do a more "realistic" take on Bowser. If this was attempted now, we'd probably get some CGI creature as the villain. I think Bowser was fine here. He played the villain to a T.
Though, we did get some CGI creatures like this:
A more realistic take on Yoshi. Kind of cute isn't he?
But really it comes down to these guys:
They made the movie fun. I can't think of any other actors playing Mario & Luigi. To me, these guys did a good job of that. I liked them.
Sure, the movie isn't perfect. Like I said, the enemies were goofy. Parts of the movie were even a little corny. But honestly, I'd much have a movie like THIS, then a gritty reboot of Super Mario Bros. I'd rather take something thats a little bit corny over a totally realistic take on Mario Bros (or even a totally unrealistic take on them). I just think that would be an absolute tragedy.
Of course, with all this said, its been awhile since I've seen this movie. Maybe if I went back & watched it now I wouldn't like it? Thats possible. But for now, I'll just smile and remember how much I did like it. Not everyone agrees that its bad. The definition of a good movie changes with every person.

Zero Days Without A Zombie Incident
I'm not a fan of anime' but I love retro artwork. Zombie Incident, coming to 3DS from developer CoderChild, has anime artwork (as you can see the picture above) on its menu. ugh. That said, the game itself is totally retro. I really dig the gameplay's art style! I like that it uses the second screen for a map & stats too.
The game is a platformer. We do have a lot of platformers but I think what makes this one a bit different is 1-It has zombies and 2-It has a REALLY dark storyline. This is from the official website:
" Hamartia, the great citadel, became the symbol of human sin. After centuries of excesses its penance was going to come. In the darkness of the night, chaos invaded everything. Beasts started to scream. Nothing was like before! No one sane would go to that place.
Join our heroine to explore the citadel, find the eight golden stars, and run away from there! "
Pretty unique huh?
Also I think this:
Will really promote replay value. An online leaderboard will make some people want to go back and play the game again to get a higher score!
I got all this information and the pictures from the official website here: http://www.coderchild.com/zombieincident/
Zombie Incident looks like a unique and fun 2D platformer. Its coming out March 5,2015 (according to this site: http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/k-lB6cy7XImMyxUZ6lB8y9qo3armxcaG ) .
In other words, THIS THURSDAY. The game will only be $1.99.
